As the world recovered from the negative effects of the global new type of coronavirus (Kovid-19) epidemic last year, the report compared the first 6 months of 2021 with the same period of 2019 to reveal how the clean energy transformation took place.

Emissions originating from the electricity sector on a global scale started to increase again after the record decline seen last year as a result of the measures taken to prevent the epidemic.

The industry body claims 40GW of solar capacity must be in place by 2030 if the UK is to remain on target to reach net zero by 2050, as set out in its national climate commitments.

In a new report, Solar Energy UK predicts such a scaling up of capacity could create 13,000 new jobs across the sector and drive £17 billion of additional economic activity, while simultaneously cutting national carbon emissions by 21.2 million tonnes per year, or around 4.7%.

It is estimated that the share of total electricity capacity in solar energy will be 51% by 2030 in the top 10 solar energy markets of Asia Pacific.

Expressing that market barriers have been overcome with new policies in the region, Xin Zhang noted that the share of solar energy in Asia Pacific’s energy production will increase from 4% in 2020 to 10% in 2030.

In that period, the competitiveness of solar (concentrating solar power, utility‑scale solar photovoltaic) and offshore wind all joined onshore wind in the same range of costs as for new capacity fired by fossil fuels, calculated without financial support. Indeed, the trend is not only one of renewables competing with fossil fuels, but significantly undercutting them, when new electricity generation capacity is required.
