Europeans got more of their electricity from renewable sources than fossil fuels for the first time last year, according to an annual report from Ember and Agora Energiewende. The report, which has been tracking EU’s power sector since 2015, found that renewables delivered 38% of electricity last year, compared to 37% delivered by fossil fuels.

The shift comes as other sources, such as wind and solar power, have risen in the European Union.

The International Energy Agency on Tuesday cut its 2021 global oil demand forecast, citing soaring Covid-19 cases and renewed lockdown measures that will further limit mobility.

The IEA said it now expects world oil demand to recover by 5.5 million barrels per day to 96.6 million this year. That reflects a downward revision of 0.3 million barrels from last month’s assessment and follows an unprecedented collapse of 8.8 million barrels per day last year as the coronavirus pandemic battered global oil markets.

The overarching challenge of COVID-19 is expected to impair the growth rates in almost all economies over the medium-term. The average OECD growth rate will stand at 0.7% p.a. in the period from 2019 to 2025, compared to the pre-COVID-19 projected growth level of 2.1%p.a.

For non-OECD countries, GDP is expected to grow by 3.4% p.a. on average during the same period, which is more than 1 percentage point lower compared to past projections.

The International Energy Agency plans to revise down its oil-demand forecasts next week because of the spreading coronavirus. “I am going to announce it Monday morning in Paris,” IEA chief Fatih Birol told a Congressional hearing in Washington on Thursday. “The impacts are already severe mainly because the transport sector is heavily affected.”

Last month, the Paris-based adviser to industrialized nations warned that the virus could curb annual growth in oil consumption to the lowest since 2011, but still called for 800,000 barrels a day of growth.
