Popular Turkish cartoon character King Shakir and his friends are urging young people to make the world a greener, healthier and more equitable place through a campaign launched this week by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The campaign is designed to introduce children and their parents to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and build support for the fight against inequality and climate change.

King Shakir is a Turkish TV cartoon created by Varol Yaşaroğlu, along with the creative works of Berk Tokay and Haluk Can Dizdaroğlu and produced by Grafi2000 for Cartoon Network Turkey.

“Who’s Gonna End?”, a new song released today by Turkish Eurovision winner Sertab Erener and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Turkey, issues an urgent call for everyone to join hands to fight climate change, end poverty, promote equality and protect the planet, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Timed to coincide with the Glasgow climate summit, the new music video includes a cameo by a computer-generated dinosaur who delivers the message, “Don’t choose extinction,” as part of UNDP’s global campaign urging the world to curb carbon emissions before it is too late.

A new partnership formed aims to increase investments in renewable energy projects to speed up the global transition to net-zero emissions.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) will leverage their networks and cooperate on scaling up investments in low-carbon energy resources.

IRENA and CIF will share their expertise in raising capital and deployment of renewable energy projects to increase global investments in clean projects for climate mitigation.

Parties to the 2015 Paris Agreement pledged to limit global warming to well below 2 °C and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C relative to pre-industrial times1.

However, fossil fuels continue to dominate the global energy system and a sharp decline in their use must be realized to keep the temperature increase below 1.5 °C (refs. 2,3,4,5,6,7). McKinsey & Company, together with the C40 Cities Climate Leadership network, prepared a report on the adaptation process of cities to climate change. The report, which includes 15 high-potential action proposals that can be implemented in cities with different characteristics, is expected to support the strategies of leaders in local governments. New research published by Yale University reveals that people around the world are highly concerned about climate change and want governments to take action on it.

In this survey, conducted by Yale University Climate Change Communication Program researchers with sample groups using Facebook in 30 different countries, on people’s attitudes towards climate change, Turkey also takes part.

The report shows country-level results for each topic. At the global level, the following stand out:

– The overwhelming majority of citizens in each country surveyed now believe that climate change is happening (ranging from 78-94%).

Our current education in our country is not sufficient in terms of climate change. Students are not prepared to face the effects of climate change or are not taught solutions, nor do they develop feelings of empathy that will enable them to connect with nature.

But we can change that.

Sustainability and climate change should be taught in the curriculum, and future generations should be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills for the process of adaptation to living conditions and the green jobs of the future.
