IS THIS OUR LAST CHANCE?

Le temps des forêts [The Time of Forests] (2019)

June 21–27 2021

Director: François-Xavier Drouet

103 minutes

French; Turkish and English subtitles

Between 1990 and 2015, the global forest area was reduced by 129 million hectares, which is eight times the size of the French Metropolitan forest. This deforestation has led to an eleven per cent increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Forests play a critical role in mitigating climate change because they act as a carbon sink—soaking up carbon dioxide that would otherwise be free in the atmosphere and contribute to ongoing changes in climate patterns. From Limousin to Landes, from Morvan to Vosges, French forests are changing. As the symbol of authentic, wild nature, forests across Europe are undergoing an unprecedented phase of industrialization.

Changing forest management practices, intensive agricultural models, and privatization—supported by heavy mechanization, monoculture, fertilizers, and pesticides—are compounded by a loss of traditional know-how. Through interviews with rangers, forestry commission officials, sawmill operators and land rights campaigners in France, Le temps des forêts [The Time of Forests] is a journey to the heart of industrial forestry—and its alternatives.

IS THIS OUR LAST CHANCE?

The Condor and The Eagle (2019)

June 28–July 4

Directors: Clement Guerra and Sophie Guerra

90 minutes

English; Turkish subtitles

“The Eagle and The Condor” is an ancient prophecy shared by many Indigenous people, which says that when the Eagle of North America and the Condor of South America unite, the spirit of peace will awaken. After 500 years of colonization, Indigenous elders believe that this union has begun. The documentary film offers a glimpse into this developing spiritual renaissance as four Indigenous leaders learn from each other’s long legacy of resistance to colonialism and its extractive economy. Filmed in the verdant jungles of the Amazon (Ecuador and Peru), the brightly colored cultures of the Pan American First Nations communities (Vancouver, Alberta), and the United States Indian tribes (Oklahoma), viewers glimpse extraordinary beauty in the places, faces, and regalia of traditional people.

The film provides an intimate view of the effects of petroleum extraction on people’s physical and spiritual well-being. It takes the struggle for climate justice beyond the standard borders of separate nations and shows a new, larger movement rising up across many Indigenous peoples, using thrilling cinematography, deeply personal stories and the urgency of tomorrow’s headlines.
