Kategori : ELECTRICITY ENERGY NEWS, ENERGY AGENDA NEWS, NUCLEAR ENERGY NEWS - Tarih : 09 August 2021

The Federal Environment, Technology and Nuclear Inspection Service of the Russian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (Rostekhnadzor) has granted Rusatom Overseas A.Ş a license allowing the company to build nuclear facilities at nuclear power plants. This license was obtained within the scope of the project for the construction of an on-board small modular reactor plant (SMR NPP) with RITM-200N reactor to be implemented in Yakutia (Russia).

Rusatom Overseas A.Ş Vice President Oleg Sirazetdinov said in a statement on the subject, “We have reached another milestone in our work by obtaining the Rostekhnadzor license for our SMR project in Yakutia. This is an important step towards the successful implementation of the project, which is planned to be completed in 2028.”

The SMR project in Yakutia relies on combining years of experience from small reactor operation in the Russian nuclear icebreaker fleet with the technology of RITM-200 reactors from Rosatom. Currently, 6 RITM-200 reactors are installed in state-of-the-art icebreakers Arktika, Sibir and Ural. The Arctic icebreaker, whose two reactors successfully passed port and sea trials, entered service on October 21, 2020. 4 more RITM-200 reactors will be installed on the icebreakers under construction.

Russian State Atomic Energy Agency Rosatom and the Administration of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) signed an agreement on October 23, 2020 for the construction of the FOAK SMR NPP in northeastern Russia. Under the agreement, Yakutia confirmed its readiness to assist in the establishment of the SMR NPP, as well as guarantee the purchase of up to 50 MW of SMR electricity.

With the Environmental Impact Assessment and verification of the site license of the developed materials, most of the engineering research in the field has been completed. On June 22, 2021, a public information meeting was held in Yakutia on the subject. Construction of the SMR NPP is expected to begin in 2024.
