PepsiCo’s 2020 Sustainability Report Has Been Released

In its 2020 Sustainability Report, PepsiCo announced that despite the negative atmosphere created by the pandemic for consumers, employees and all its stakeholders, it has advanced its social and sustainability goals throughout the supply chain. Continuing to work in line with the sustainability targets set by PepsiCo globally, PepsiCo Turkey also carries out many studies, from carbon emission reduction to gender equality, in order to achieve its sustainable development goals.

PepsiCo, one of the world’s leading food and beverage companies, has published its 2020 Sustainability Report. In the PepsiCo report; He explained that much more work is needed to address key challenges in the food system, such as climate change, loss of fertile soil, packaging waste and inequality, while demonstrating that the momentum for positive change for the planet and people continues.

“By considering our planet’s priorities, we are working to transform the way we create shared value by fostering positive change for our planet and people,” said Ramon Laguarta, PepsiCo Chairman and CEO.

Laguarta also said, “This will make us a better company that deeply integrates beneficence into our business strategy. It will also make us faster and stronger, ensuring accelerated growth and sustained investment in our people, businesses and communities. We hope he will set a good example.”

PepsiCo Sustainability Officer Jim Andrew said: “2020 has been a year of challenges and change. I would like to say that there is an urgent need for cooperation and change towards a more sustainable and resilient food system as the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic are deeply affecting every corner of the world. I am proud that PepsiCo has overcome this challenge in 2020. PepsiCo will never compromise its passion to make a positive impact on the planet and the communities we serve.”

PepsiCo sustainably supplies 100% of its products (core raw materials) directly in 28 countries.
PepsiCo aims to bring environmental, social and economic benefits to communities around the world by supporting practices and technologies that improve farmers’ livelihoods and agricultural resilience, such as regenerative agriculture.

With this understanding, PepsiCo is sustainably sourcing approximately 87% of direct products globally by 2020. It sustainably supplies 100% of direct products in 28 countries. The company has also set a target within the scope of Positive Agriculture in order to spread regenerative agricultural practices globally to 28.3 million acres and to reduce an estimated 3 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. In addition, the company has set the target of improving the livelihoods of more than 250,000 people in the agricultural supply chain by 2030.

PepsiCo aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2040

PepsiCo is committed to doing its part in tackling the climate crisis by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the value chain and creating flexibility in its operations and supply chain.

In this context, as of 2020, PepsiCo has reduced its absolute GHG emissions across the value chain by 5 % compared to 2015. In 2020, PepsiCo obtained 100% renewable energy for its direct operations in its largest market, the USA. As for Turkey, PepsiCo uses all of its electricity needs from solar panels, OWM centers that generate energy from waste, and sources with “renewable energy” certification as of 2021. PepsiCo announced its science-based climate target in early 2021 and stated that it aims to reduce absolute GHG emissions in the value chain by more than 40% by 2030. PepsiCo has set a rather aggressive new target to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, 10 years ahead of what was envisioned in the Paris Agreement.

PepsiCo aims to move towards a worldview where packaging is never wasted

PepsiCo offers PepsiCo products in 100% rPET packaging in 22 global markets. Thanks to the continued growth of PepsiCo’s global SodaStream business, it will prevent the use of an estimated 78 billion single-use plastic bottles by 2025. In addition, PepsiCo works with a broad group, including industry peers, nonprofits, and companies in the plastics supply chain, collaborating to drive progress towards a circular economy. Since 2018, PepsiCo and the PepsiCo Foundation have committed to investing over $65 million in global recycling partnership initiatives to increase recycling rates and waste collection.

Target less added sugar, sodium, and saturated fat

In addition to its sustainability efforts, PepsiCo offers a wide range of products for human and planetary purposes.
