Huawei has released its 2020 Sustainability Report. Last year, Huawei focused more on areas such as education, healthcare, data security, and environmental protection.
Huawei shared its annual Sustainability Report for the 13th time this year. The report included the 
activities of the company in different fields, from ecology to education, from health to human-oriented technology.
While evaluating this year’s report, Tao Jingwen, Chairman and Board Member of Huawei CSD Committee; “We believe that technology should be people-centred. “Technology should be used in a way that fully respects human rights, through informed choices and based on human consent.”
Support for education and network access in the pandemic
COVID-19 has had an unprecedented impact on education and health systems globally. During this period, Huawei signed innovative IT solutions to ensure that individuals and institutions in different regions have access to quality education and health resources and continued to do its part in the fight against the pandemic. The company has benefited more than 60,000 students by launching the “Skills on Wheels” and “Connecting Schools” programs in more than 200 schools around the world. Huawei also supported the pandemic struggle in the regions where it operates with its IT solutions. The company did its best during this difficult time, providing technical assistance to nearly 90 countries.
In 2020, Huawei held more than 650 social responsibility events around the world. The company’s flagship corporate social responsibility program “Seeds for the Future” has benefited nearly 9,000 students in 130 countries and regions, who are expected to form the IT talent pool of the future.
The company has also launched its RuralStar Pro solution, which provides voice and mobile broadband services for lower populated remote residential areas. RuralStar solutions today provide network access to more than 50 million people in remote living areas.
Safe and sustainable communication
Huawei sees cybersecurity and data privacy as its top priority. By the end of 2020, the company had held 2,963 patents on cybersecurity and data privacy worldwide. Last year, Huawei also signed data processing agreements with more than 5,000 suppliers and conducted extensive due diligence to ensure compliance. Despite the pandemic process and being on the asset list, Huawei has seamlessly connected more than 3 billion people worldwide. The company also continued to support network stability in more than 200 catastrophic major events.
Environmental approach, sustainable development
Liang Hua, Chairman of the Board of Huawei, in his assessment; “A smart world should be a green world. Advances in technology can help us better understand and protect nature and reduce the negative impact of human activities on the planet. “We believe technology can work in harmony with nature and help make this world a better place.”
Huawei focuses on reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy as part of its efforts to create a greener and more sustainable digital world. In 2020, Huawei’s CO2 emissions per million Yuan of sales revenue fell by 33.2% compared to 2012, exceeding the company’s target of 30% in 2016. In 2020, Huawei also helped manage natural resources and efficiently conserve biodiversity in 22 protected areas in 18 countries.
To promote renewable energy, Huawei has rolled out digital energy solutions in more than 170 countries and regions, covering a third of the world’s population. These solutions have so far produced 325 billion kWh of electricity from renewable sources and saved 10 billion kWh of electricity. These efforts brought about a 160 million-ton reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
