Germany has set out its plan to claw back 90% of the earnings from some clean power generators as the government seeks funding for its consumer aid package.

The government is planning to skim earnings above €130 a megawatt-hour for solar, wind and nuclear, according to a draft law seen by Bloomberg News. Politicians are trying to reclaim some of the profits that companies like RWE AG are making from high power…

Increasing concerns over energy security and climate change will mobilize record levels of new capacity to generate renewable energy in 2022, according to the International Energy Agency’s forecasts.

The IEA estimates that 320 gigawatts will be in effect this year, up from the previous record of 295 gigawatts in 2021. This figure is equivalent to the total annual demand of Germany, Europe’s largest economy. With the growth of solar power in China and Europe, additions last year exceeded expectations the Paris-based agency outlined in a new report on renewable sources.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), solar energy now accounts for 28% of the world’s renewable electricity generation capacity, just ahead of wind with 27%. This time last year, the two were evenly matched at 26% each.

Solar and wind energy are not the only renewable electricity sources, but they are building a dominant position in the market. IRENA’s figures show that solar and wind were responsible for 88% of all new renewable capacity in 2021.

While solar power capacity in China is predicted to reach a record level with new investments that will come into operation this year, according to the China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA) data, it is predicted that China’s solar power capacity will increase by 75-90 GW in 2022.

CPIA President Wang Bohua emphasized that China has the opportunity to increase its solar power capacity by 83-99,000 MW each year in the period 2022-2025.

Unlike many European countries, Turkey’s coal power generation dropped again in 2021, for the third year in a row. The dramatic slowdown across Europe due to Coronavirus lockdowns has caused electricity demand to plumet by one-tenth in the first three months of 2020 – the biggest drop in demand since the Second World War.

This has caused power generation across the continent to fall. But in a potentially positive sign for Europe’s energy transition, fossil fuel generation is falling far more than renewable power.

According to an analysis by the Wärtsilä Energy Transition Lab, coal-based power generation has fallen by over a quarter (25.5%) across the European Union and United Kingdom in the first three months of 2020 compared to 2019.

The latest report on energy system developments shows that 176 GWs of new renewable energy capacity accounted for 72% of all new energy capacity additions in 2019.

The data, released in the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)’s annual Renewable Capacity Statistics 2020, showed that while the 2019 figure was slightly lower than 2018’s 179 GW the market continued to expand, up over 7.5%. Asia showed the most spectacular growth, with 54% of total additions while wind and solar power accounted by 90% of capacity deployed.
