Iberdrola SA is working to build what it says will be Europe’s largest solar farm at a cost of 300 million euros ($337 million). The Spanish utility has started the process with the country’s Ecological Transition ministry to build a 590-megawatt farm in the Western region of Extremadura, according to a statement Thursday. The company will now follow government rules to hold public hearings and collect comments on the impact on the environment and for landowners, a mandatory process before starting the project.

As countries look to decarbonize transport, increasing the use of electric cars is proving key to that effort. And batteries are the key challenge to making those electric cars work. Now, a new study says that those batteries may also be the key to reducing the power sector’s emissions by increasing efficiency.

The study by Element Energy, commissioned by energy companies Enel and Iberdrola, carmaker Renault and the NGO Transport & Environment, said that a smart deployment of electric cars which charge at low-demand times and batteries that feed back into the grid at high-demand times would reduce the need to build additional grid storage and power plants.

A transition towards a low-carbon economy is forecast to boost output and employment growth in the EU thanks to a spur in investment in clean energy, according to a new report released on Tuesday. An analysis run by Cambridge Econometrics and EU agency Eurofound’s European jobs monitor calculated that the EU28 GDP would be 1.1 per cent higher by 2030 in case of the Paris Climate agreement was implemented compared to the baseline scenario.

The number of jobs would be boosted by 0.5 per cent over the same period.

The amount of future new wind capacity in Europe financed last year rose to a record high, industry group WindEurope said on Thursday, as falling costs and increased competition made it possible for investors to fund more for less cash.

In total, 16.7 gigawatts (GW) of projects reached a final investment decision – 12.5 GW onshore and 4.2 GW offshore – 45 percent more than in 2017, WindEurope said in its annual report.

Funding for the new investments rose to 26.7 billion euros ($30.3 billion).

France and Germany are pooling efforts to kick-start battery cell production in Europe aiming to take on rivals from Asia which dominate the global market, top officials from both nations said.

Germany will put up 1 billion euros ($1.13 billion) and France 750 million euros in subsidies to co-finance building factories in their respective countries, said Economy and Energy Minister Peter Altmaier and Bruno Le Maire, who is France’s economy and finance minister.

The joint initiative brings Europe a step closer in creating a new industry from scratch, Le Maire told reporters in Berlin after a meeting on Tuesday.

As delegates convene at UN-backed climate talks in Poland this week, the Spanish will have a new trophy in hand: a renewable energy plan that seeks to reverse years of rising emissions.

Spain’s proposals, set to be adopted by the cabinet in coming weeks, spell out an ambitious target to draw 100 per cent of the country’s electricity from renewables by 2050. The plan also aims to cut emissions by more than 90 per cent over the same period.
