Shell (SHEL.L) said on Monday it would acquire Danish biogas producer Nature Energy for nearly $2 billion, as it looks to boost its low-carbon business amid growing interest in biogas.

Reuters had reported last month Shell was among a number of companies joining a second bidding round to acquire the Denmark-based company.

Nature Energy, which operates 12 biogas plants in Denmark and one in France and has others in the pipeline, confirmed the deal in a separate statement.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), in partnership with Enea Consulting and Deloitte Australia, has developed a roadmap to help the country accelerate its deployment of bioenergy capacity to speed up the energy transition.

According to ARENA, by increasing its bioenergy capacity, Australia can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ensure secure energy supply, improve waste recovery and revitalise the economy.

Up to AUS$10 billion (US$7.2 billion) can be added to Australia’s GDP per annum by the bioenergy sector and 26,200 new jobs created, greenhouse gas emissions reduced by 9%, and an extra 6% of waste from landfills diverted, stated the Roadmap.

By 2030, the global economy will create more green jobs than the number lost during the pandemic if investments in renewable energy are increased in line with sustainability targets set under the Paris Agreements, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has said.

In its new Renewable Energy and Jobs Annual review 2021, complied in partnership with the International Labour Organisation, IRENA predicts that some 25 million new green jobs will be created by 2030, surpassing the 7 million lost due to the pandemic.

Energy will be produced by burning 86 tons/day chicken manure at the facility, which will be established with an investment cost of 6.3 million liras.

Mechanical energy will be produced with the help of alternators and transferred to the grid with the help of transformers.

After nearly two decades of strong annual growth, renewables around the world added as much net capacity in 2018 as they did in 2017, an unexpected flattening of growth trends that raises concerns about meeting long-term climate goals.

Last year was the first time since 2001 that growth in renewable power capacity failed to increase year on year. Energy storage company 1414 Degrees switched on its gas thermal energy storage system (TESS) at the Glenelg Wastewater Treatment Plant in Adelaide today, its first commercial pilot site. The company says the technology is the first in the world to solve the issue of effectively storing biogas as thermal energy to produce heat and electricity on demand.

TESS technology takes gas or electricity from any source and stores it as latent heat in silicon which melts at 1414°C.
