Germany Activates Coal Power Plants to Prevent Gas Shortage

Kategori : NATURAL GAS ENERGY NEWS, ELECTRICITY ENERGY NEWS, ENERGY AGENDA NEWS, COAL NEWS - Tarih : 03 July 2022

Germany will significantly increase its use of coal to protect its energy resources before the winter months come, and Russia’s reduction in gas exports threatens the deficits in Europe’s largest economy.

The German government has stated that it will pass emergency laws to reopen coal plants that are not used for electricity generation, and will auction gas supplies to industry to encourage businesses to reduce consumption. This shows the depth of concern about possible gas shortages in Berlin during the winter months, while Russia has reduced the capacity of the main gas export pipeline to Germany by 60%.

Seeing that the gas supply from Russia has also decreased, Italy is expected to announce emergency measures in the coming days if the supply is not renewed. Working on a new law to temporarily restore Berlin’s idle coal-fired power plants of up to 10 gigawatts for up to 2 years would increase Germany’s dependence on coal for electricity generation by a third. The plan contradicts Germany’s climate policy. Climate policy aims to phase out coal by 2030, as it is much more carbon-intensive than gas.
