EU Plan to End Free Carbon Permits by 2035

The carbon permits granted by the European Union (EU) to industrial enterprises free of charge will last until 2035, and the size of the free carbon permits will be reduced, according to the Frankfurther Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) report published according to the climate policy reforms draft prepared by the EU Commission.

The EU Commission will announce its draft for climate policies called “Fit for 55” on July 14, and according to the climate policy reforms draft, the EU Commission will reduce the rate of free carbon permits to 50% by 2030 and will have zeroed it in 2035.

In Europe, industrial establishments currently receive 80% of their carbon emission permits free of charge from the EU, with the petroleum, steel and chemical sectors benefiting from unpaid permits in particular.
