German steel giant Salzgitter has launched a new project to reach near ‘carbon-free’ production with the help of wind energy and green hydrogen. In partnership with the industrial gases firm Linde and E.ON subsidiary Avacon, the company has commissioned a green hydrogen plant powered by wind energy.

Hydrogen will replace the carbon necessary for smelting iron ore.

Avacon operates seven newly built wind turbines with an output totalling 30MW on the site while the steel company has installed 2 Siemens 1.25MW electrolysers, which will generate around 450 cubic metres of hydrogen per hour.

Global hydrogen project pipeline will see strong growth in the next ten years as investments in the sector are predicted to reach $300 billion (£215bn) in total.

That’s according to a new report by the Hydrogen Council and McKinsey & Company, which suggests almost 228 large-scale projects in more than 30 countries have already been announced. The analysis estimates 85% of these projects are located in Europe, Asia and Australia.

Hydrogen has swept onto the world’s energy stage as the solution to decarbonization. As the clock ticks fast towards the 2050 carbon neutrality deadline and as global warming accelerates, the pressure to act is palpable. Indeed, hydrogen will play a key role in the energy transition in some sectors, if it is supported by heavy government subsidies to make it efficient and competitive. But in my view it is not the energy of the future across the board and the road to the so-called hydrogen economy is filled with pitfalls.

The world is increasingly banking on green hydrogen fuel to fill some of the critical missing pieces in the clean-energy puzzle.

US presidential candidate Joe Biden’s climate plan calls for a research program to produce a clean form of the gas that’s cheap enough to fuel power plants within a decade. Likewise, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and the European Union have all published hydrogen roadmaps that rely on it to accelerate greenhouse gas reductions in the power, transportation, or industrial sectors.
