WindEurope and Azerbaijan Join Forces to Accelerate Wind Energy

On 1 March WindEurope and the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance the deployment of onshore and offshore wind energy in Azerbaijan and the wider Caspian Sea area. Wind will play a critical role in the energy transition of both Azerbaijan and the wider Caspian region. Through this collaboration the parties aim to harness the vast onshore and offshore wind potential in the region, contributing to the global objective of tripling renewable capacity by 2030.

Europe’s Offshore Wind Sector Saw a Record $31 Billion!

The European offshore wind sector attracted over 26 billion euros (around $31.7 billion) of investment last year, a record amount, according to the latest figures from industry body WindEurope.

In an announcement Monday, the Brussels-based organization said the cash raised will finance a total of 7.1 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity, with projects set to be developed and built over the next few years.

Plans are Underway to Build Huge, Floating Offshore Wind Turbine in Europe

Spanish utility Iberdrola is heading a consortium aiming to develop a large-scale floating offshore wind turbine in the North Sea, as the sector looks to drive up the size of technology and push down costs.

In an announcement Monday, the firm said the turbine would be in excess of 10 megawatts (MW) and tested at the Marine Energy Test Centre in Norway. The average size of offshore turbines installed in 2019 was 7.8 MW, according to trade body WindEurope.

Record Amount of New Wind Capacity Financed in Europe Last Year

The amount of future new wind capacity in Europe financed last year rose to a record high, industry group WindEurope said on Thursday, as falling costs and increased competition made it possible for investors to fund more for less cash.

In total, 16.7 gigawatts (GW) of projects reached a final investment decision – 12.5 GW onshore and 4.2 GW offshore – 45 percent more than in 2017, WindEurope said in its annual report.

Funding for the new investments rose to 26.7 billion euros ($30.3 billion).
