Wind is now America’s top renewable source of electricity generation. 2020 in particular was a banner year for wind power in the U.S., with more capacity installed in the final quarter of 2020 alone than in all of 2019. Now, the total capacity exceeds 120,000 MW, enough to power about 38 million homes.

Essentially all of that growth was in the onshore wind sector. Developers are planning more offshore projects for the coming years, too.

Danish energy firm Orsted and TSMC, a Taiwan-headquartered semiconductor company which supplies businesses such as Apple, have signed a deal described as “the world’s largest renewables corporate power purchase agreement.” Announced Wednesday, the 20-year deal will see TSMC – also known as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company – purchase all the energy produced by Orsted’s yet-to-be-built 920-megawatt offshore wind farm off Taiwan.

The fixed price contract will come into force when commercial operations at the facility begin.

The U.K. government has announced £100 million ($126.11 million) of extra funding for renewable energy projects in Africa. The money will be used to support the Renewable Energy Performance Platform (REPP), which was set up in 2015 and supported by £48 million in initial funding from the U.K. 

The REPP’s broad goal is to “catalyze the growth” of the renewable energy sector in sub-Saharan Africa by helping developers to “overcome barriers to finance.”

The program currently backs 18 renewable energy projects in countries such as Tanzania, Burundi, Nigeria and Kenya.
