This year, the 13th Turkish Wind Energy Congress TUREK 2024  organized by TÜREK-Turkish Wind Energy Association provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the latest technological developments, innovative strategies and future projections. The congress, which was held on 5-6 November 2024, was hosted by Istanbul Hilton Bomonti Hotel.

China’s installed wind and solar capacity will overtake coal for the first time this year, an industry body forecast on Tuesday.

The China Electricity Council (CEC) in a yearly report said grid-connected wind and solar would make up around 40% of installed power generation capacity by the end of 2024, compared with coal’s expected 37%.

By comparison, wind and solar together were around 36% of capacity at the end of 2023, and coal was just under 40%.

German wind turbine maker Nordex (NDXG.DE) reported a 21% fall in 2022 first half sales on Sunday, citing lower demand for installations, and stuck to a forecast of a drop for the year as a whole.

Nordex said the war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing energy and logistics disruptions had led to negative first-half earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of 173.3 million euros, after a positive 68.4 million euro result in the same year-ago period.

GlobalData has announced that Vestas is the leading global wind turbine manufacturer in 2021.

Vestas Wind Systems is the leader in wind turbines with a 19% share of global installations with 16.6 gigawatt (GW) installations in 2021, while high-level projects commissioned in America and Europe and stable installation activity in Asia-Pacific have allowed it to exceed the 16.6 GW limit.

In its home market, the United States, GE Renewable Energy has over 11.7 GW of power, representing approximately 13.4% of annual installations worldwide.

The invasion of Ukraine has highlighted the geopolitical liability for the European Union from fossil fuel imports from autocratic regimes. In response, the European Union is for ways to replace Russian gas imports in the short term, taking critical decisions over investment in infrastructure and economic relationships.

Unlike many European countries, Turkey’s coal power generation dropped again in 2021, for the third year in a row. On the other hand, gas generation increased to compensate for the drought-induced decline in hydropower generation. Hence Turkey’s emissions per kWh power generation remain unchanged. In fact there has been no significant improvement in Turkey’s carbon intensity of power in at least 30 years.

Hydropower has a very long history in Turkey, the first power plant in its history was a hydropower plant constructed in Southern Turkey in the early 1900s during the Ottoman Empire era.

Erciyes WPP, owned by Enerjisa Enerji, has been granted a 49-year production license by EMRA.

With the decision numbered 10260-13 taken on June 10, 2021, the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) belongs to Enerjisa Enerji Üretim AŞ; It granted a 49-year production license to the Erciyes Wind Power Plant (WPP) Project, which is under construction in Yahyalı district of Kayseri.

When Erciyes WPP is commissioned, it will have a capacity of 65MWe.

There were 61 electricity procurement contracts announced in the Europe region in Q1 2021, marking a rise of 42% over the last four-quarter average of 43, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Power Plant stood at first place when compared with other power tender categories in the Europe region in Q1 2021 with 206 contracts and a 44.1% share, followed by Generation Equipment with 106 contracts and a 22.7% share and Electricity Procurement with 61 contracts and a 13.1% share during the quarter.

2020 was the best year in history for the global wind industry with 93 GW of new capacity installed – a 53 per cent year-on-year increase – but this growth is not sufficient to ensure the world achieves net zero by 2050.

Global wind power installations must increase three times faster than the current pace over the next decade to allow countries to stay on a net zero pathway and limit global warming. That’s according to a new report by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), which suggests a minimum of 180GW of new wind energy is needed every single year to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

The data shows the wind industry installed 93GW of new wind last year, helping the current total global capacity reach 743GW.
