<p>In its new <em>Renewable Energy and Jobs Annual review 2021</em>, complied in <strong>partnership with the International Labour Organisation</strong>, IRENA predicts that some<strong> 25 million</strong> new green jobs will be created by 2030, surpassing the<strong> 7 million</strong> lost due to the pandemic.</p>

Now, an international team of researchers has determined that if every available rooftop was equipped with solar panels, they could generate enough electricity to power the world.</p>
<p>In addition, <strong>rooftop solar</strong> has the advantage of both reducing local air pollution—where it replaces conventional <strong>fossil fuel-based energy generation</strong>—and reducing transmission network loads by decentralizing electricity supply.</p>

There has been significant debate about how best to structure incentives and regulations around customer-sited solar – and more recently solar-plus-storage – and the considerations are complex. Policy makers must aim to stimulate development that realizes the benefits of these technologies, while avoiding the potential adverse effects of large-scale uncoordinated development.</p>
<p>There have been limited studies at a <strong>global level to examine</strong> the <strong>impact of different policies</strong> on the economics, and therefore the uptake, of customer-sited solar (at first without, and later with storage).</p>

<p>That’s one of the findings of a new report by the <strong>International Hydropower Association (IHA)</strong>, which estimates there is a gap of more than <strong>300 GW</strong> needed to <strong>limit global warming.</strong></p>
<p>Both the<strong> International Energy Agency</strong> and the<strong> International Renewable Energy Agency</strong> have previously said that around <strong>850 GW</strong> of new <strong>hydropower capacity</strong> will be required by <strong>2050</strong> to keep temperatures below <strong>2°C.</strong></p>

<p class="dcr-s23rjr">The fast-growing operation had initially set a target to develop arrays of panels with a total capacity of 10 gigawatts by 2023, enough for almost 3.4m homes, but the fresh funds will be used to turbocharge its ambition to 25GW by 2025.</p>
