Shell (SHEL.L) said on Monday it would acquire Danish biogas producer Nature Energy for nearly $2 billion, as it looks to boost its low-carbon business amid growing interest in biogas.

Reuters had reported last month Shell was among a number of companies joining a second bidding round to acquire the Denmark-based company.

Nature Energy, which operates 12 biogas plants in Denmark and one in France and has others in the pipeline, confirmed the deal in a separate statement.

Shell, one of the global oil and gas companies, will establish a biofuel facility in the Netherlands with a capacity to produce 820,000 tons of clean fuel per year.

In the Netherlands, one of the largest biofuel facilities in Europe will be established by Royal Dutch Shell in order to help its target of reducing carbon emissions to net zero by 2050.

While the biofuel facility is planned to start production in 2024, the facility will produce aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel from oil waste, and the facility will also prevent the emission of approximately 2,800,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

Shell completed the sale of its oil assets located in the Western Sahara Desert location to Cheiron Petroleuim and Cairn Energy for $926 million.

Royal Dutch Shell announced that it has completed the sale of its oil and gas assets in Egypt’s Western Sahara Desert location, while Egypt-based Cheiron Petroleuim and UK-based Cairn Energy together with Shell Egypt’s share of 13 land licenses for $926 million in the business’ Badr El-Din Petroleum. In line with Royal Dutch Shell’s goal of reducing carbon emissions and turning to environmental solutions, the assets purchased by the American energy company ConocoPhilips include 600 miles of oil, natural gas and water pipelines.

7 billion dollars of the revenue to be provided by Shell from the sale will be directed to the shareholders and the balance sheet will be supported with the remaining amount.

Oil major Royal Dutch Shell on Thursday outlined the details of its near-term and long-term plans to transition to cleaner energy, saying its oil production and total carbon emissions have already peaked.

Shell said it aims to reduce net carbon emissions by between 6% to 8% by 2023 when compared to 2016 levels. The target jumps up to 20% by 2030, 45% by 2035, and 100% by 2050.

As the global economy restarts, fewer people will fly and use their cars, analysts including Ed Morse wrote. Microsoft this announced a new wind energy deal in the Netherlands. As part of this deal, Microsoft will purchase 90 MW from Borssele III/IV belonging to wind farm developer Eneco. Microsoft will use this green energy to power its datacenters for 15 years starting in 2022. This is Microsoft’s 14th renewable energy deal and with this deal, Microsoft’s total clean energy portfolio has reached 1.5 gigawatts.

“Our purchasing of renewable energy helps improve the sustainability of our operations and local grids,” said Brian Janous, general manager, Energy and Sustainability, Microsoft.

Royal Dutch Shell has announced its arrival as a household gas and electricity supplier, moving 700,000 First Utility customers to its Shell Energy brand. All of Shell’s residential energy customers will be supplied with 100 per cent renewable electricity. Shell Energy customers can take advantage of a 3 per cent discount at Shell petrol stations, as well as discounts on home technology like smart thermostats and electric vehicle chargers.

Shell Energy chief executive Colin Crooks said the company would use fuel forecourts to promote the new offer.

Shell is to acquire German battery storage manufacturer sonnen in a bid to accelerate its home energy services position. Sonnen is to sit as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shell should the acquisition clear regulatory approvals, and the deal comes less than a year after Shell made an investment in the battery firm.

The companies said the deal stood to accelerate their respective abilities to provide integrated energy services and electric vehicle charging solutions to homes, while also benefitting the provision of grid services via sonnen’s virtual power plant platform.
