Increasing concerns over energy security and climate change will mobilize record levels of new capacity to generate renewable energy in 2022, according to the International Energy Agency’s forecasts.

The IEA estimates that 320 gigawatts will be in effect this year, up from the previous record of 295 gigawatts in 2021. This figure is equivalent to the total annual demand of Germany, Europe’s largest economy. With the growth of solar power in China and Europe, additions last year exceeded expectations the Paris-based agency outlined in a new report on renewable sources.

Unlike many European countries, Turkey’s coal power generation dropped again in 2021, for the third year in a row. On the other hand, gas generation increased to compensate for the drought-induced decline in hydropower generation. Hence Turkey’s emissions per kWh power generation remain unchanged. The dramatic slowdown across Europe due to Coronavirus lockdowns has caused electricity demand to plumet by one-tenth in the first three months of 2020 – the biggest drop in demand since the Second World War.

This has caused power generation across the continent to fall. But in a potentially positive sign for Europe’s energy transition, fossil fuel generation is falling far more than renewable power.

According to an analysis by the Wärtsilä Energy Transition Lab, coal-based power generation has fallen by over a quarter (25.5%) across the European Union and United Kingdom in the first three months of 2020 compared to 2019.

The latest report on energy system developments shows that 176 GWs of new renewable energy capacity accounted for 72% of all new energy capacity additions in 2019.

The data, released in the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)’s annual Renewable Capacity Statistics 2020, showed that while the 2019 figure was slightly lower than 2018’s 179 GW the market continued to expand, up over 7.5%. Asia showed the most spectacular growth, with 54% of total additions while wind and solar power accounted by 90% of capacity deployed.

Iberdrola SA is working to build what it says will be Europe’s largest solar farm at a cost of 300 million euros ($337 million). The Spanish utility has started the process with the country’s Ecological Transition ministry to build a 590-megawatt farm in the Western region of Extremadura, according to a statement Thursday. The company will now follow government rules to hold public hearings and collect comments on the impact on the environment and for landowners, a mandatory process before starting the project.

Energy storage company 1414 Degrees switched on its gas thermal energy storage system (TESS) at the Glenelg Wastewater Treatment Plant in Adelaide today, its first commercial pilot site. The company says the technology is the first in the world to solve the issue of effectively storing biogas as thermal energy to produce heat and electricity on demand.

TESS technology takes gas or electricity from any source and stores it as latent heat in silicon which melts at 1414°C.

Today, the consensus among leading forecasters is that we can expect continued rapid growth in renewables. Wind and solar power provided 6 per cent of the world’s electricity in 2017, according to the International Energy Agency. One-third of the world’s installed electricity generation capacity is from renewable sources, according to the latest industry statistics.

The data compiled by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows that two-thirds of the power capacity added around the world in 2018 was from renewables. Wind and solar accounted for 84% of that total.
