Türkiye could increase its GDP by as much as US$8 billion per year, create more than 300,000 new jobs by 2030, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8 percent compared to the 2019 level – all by investing in renewable energy rather than continuing to rely on fossil fuels. These are the findings of a joint analysis released today in Ankara by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). Investing in wind and solar power to satisfy future energy needs would thus yield not only environmental benefits but also strong economic ones, in terms of growth, job creation and the trade balance.

Continuing to strengthen its portfolio in the field of renewable energy, Cengiz Energy started its wind power plant investment. Three of the turbines in Çankırı and Sinop, whose number will reach 28 in 3 stages, have been commissioned. The installed capacity of the turbines, which will be completed by the end of next year, will be 120 megawatts in total.

Development Investment Bank received the I-REC International Renewable Energy Certificate, which is held by institutions that supply the energy they consume from renewable sources. With this certificate obtained through Aksa Electricity, the Bank provided all of its electricity consumption from the solar power plant in 2020, saving a total of 21,565 trees and preventing carbon emissions of 469 tons.

Development Investment Bank became the owner of the I-REC International Renewable Energy Certificate, which was developed by the Netherlands-based The International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard) to promote renewable energy investment and use among businesses and consumers.

The share of renewable energy that achieved lower costs than the most competitive fossil fuel option doubled in 2020, a new report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows. 162 gigawatts (GW) or 62 per cent of total renewable power generation added last year had lower costs than the cheapest new fossil fuel option.

As the Biden Administration aims to significantly increase federal investment in renewable energy under the American Jobs Plan, the United States already ranks as the most attractive market for renewables investment, according to results from a new ranking by IHS Markit (NYSE: INFO), a world leader in critical information, analytics and solutions.

The IHS Markit Global Renewables Markets Attractiveness Rankings, which tracks attractiveness for investment for non-hydro renewables (offshore wind, onshore wind and solar PV), placed the United States in the number one spot for the period ending December 2020.

The Spanish energy group Iberdrola has launched a €75bn investment plan to 2025. Almost €35bn (51%) will go to renewables and €27bn (40%) to networks. Iberdrola intends to nearly double its renewable power capacity from 32 GW in 2019 to 60 GW in 2025, including 26 GW of onshore wind, 4 GW of offshore wind, 16 GW of solar, and 14 GW of hydro.

This renewable boost should reduce Iberdrola’s carbon factor by 86% by 2030 to 50gCO2/kWh; the group will offset emissions by planting trees to become carbon neutral by 2030.
