The president’s green infrastructure plan had drowned out the news. But nuclear energy is expensive and all of the dollar signs combined have become blinding.

While not without controversy, those small modular reactors can be factory-built and then shipped before the modules would be set side-by-side as energy needs grow.

Poland, isn’t ready to resume talks with the European Union about the mid-century climate neutrality deadline during the bloc’s summit in June, according to a senior government official.

The country endorsed the carbon neutrality goal at the bloc’s last meeting in December, but was the only member state declaring that it’s not bound by the deadline because of the effort and expense required. Coal-dependent Poland needs more time to figure out its investment needs and future energy mix, according the official, who asked not to be named.

Mini nuclear reactors could be generating power in the UK by the end of the decade. Manufacturer Rolls-Royce has told the BBC’s Today programme that it plans to install and operate factory-built power stations by 2029.

Mini nuclear stations can be mass manufactured and delivered in chunks on the back of a lorry, which makes costs more predictable. But opponents say the UK should quit nuclear power altogether.
