Microsoft has published its Digital Defense Report 2022, sharing insights on how the digital threat landscape is evolving and how to mitigate these issues. Microsoft’s report includes five chapters covering the state of cybercrime, nation-state threats, devices and infrastructure, cyber influence operations and cyber resilience.

One of the report’s key findings is that password attacks have grown by 74% compared with last year’s results, increasing to approximately 921 attacks per second.

Microsoft has also removed over 10,000 domains used by cybercriminals and 600 used by nation-state actors.

Our world has reached a point where society recognizes the planet is under stress, with energy and technology sectors at the forefront of this reckoning. Microsoft, in association with PwC, revealed the urgency of the challenges currently facing our planet, reporting that 91% of people don’t live in standard air quality-controlled areas, 60% of biodiversity has been lost since 1970, and greenhouse gases are at their highest levels in 3 million years.

Microsoft this announced a new wind energy deal in the Netherlands. As part of this deal, Microsoft will purchase 90 MW from Borssele III/IV belonging to wind farm developer Eneco. Microsoft will use this green energy to power its datacenters for 15 years starting in 2022. This is Microsoft’s 14th renewable energy deal and with this deal, Microsoft’s total clean energy portfolio has reached 1.5 gigawatts.

“Our purchasing of renewable energy helps improve the sustainability of our operations and local grids,” said Brian Janous, general manager, Energy and Sustainability, Microsoft.
