Carbon emissions in the European Union increased by 8.4% last year compared to the previous year.

Excluding the aviation sector, the European Union’s (EU) carbon emissions increased by 8.4 percent in 2021. In 2021, the total carbon emission was equal to 1 billion 353 million tons of carbon dioxide.

Carbon emissions increased by 12% in the heating and energy sector and by 5.1% in the industry.

Unlike many European countries, Turkey’s coal power generation dropped again in 2021, for the third year in a row. On the other hand, gas generation increased to compensate for the drought-induced decline in hydropower generation. Hence Turkey’s emissions per kWh power generation remain unchanged. In fact there has been no significant improvement in Turkey’s carbon intensity of power in at least 30 years.

Hydropower has a very long history in Turkey, the first power plant in its history was a hydropower plant constructed in Southern Turkey in the early 1900s during the Ottoman Empire era.

The European Union will need to continue having a nuclear energy share of at least one-quarter until 2050 to meet the emissions reduction targets it has set for that year, according to a new report from Deloitte.

The EU has set targets of reducing emissions by 40% compared to 1990 levels, and by up to 95% by 2050 – or net zero. An essential part of that plan will be phasing out the burning of coal, the highest-emitting fossil fuel which is still used heavily in countries such as Poland and Germany.

With the Paris Agreement governments agreed that global greenhouse gas emissions need to be net-zero by 2050 to limit global warming to well below 2°C; but current emission reductions efforts fall short reaching this goal, the world is currently on track to 3°C+. The energy and especially the power sector with its fossil fuels coal, oil and natural gas is the dominant source of emissions.

A rapid decarbonization is required to enable emission reductions in all sectors.

2018 was an important year for EU energy legislation, as lawmakers rushed to complete the promises of President Jean-Claude Juncker before the end of the term in just four months time. But it is still uncertain whether these new energy laws, including the bloc’s first limits on CO2 emissions from trucks, will be passed before the March deadline.

If lawmakers run out of time, it could mean that new lawmakers have to start over from the beginning when they take office this summer, following the pan-European election in May.
