A recent analysis from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) illustrates how electricity storage technologies can be used for a variety of applications in the power sector, from e-mobility and behind-the-meter applications to utility-scale use cases.

Utility-scale batteries, for example, can enable a greater feed-in of renewables into the grid by storing excess generation and by firming renewable energy output.

Drax Power Station — which is located near the town of Selby, North Yorkshire — has a capacity of 3,906 megawatts and generates approximately 18 terawatt-hours of power annually, according to the firm.

The facility has 6 units: four which have been converted to generate power using what Drax describes as “sustainable biomass,” and two which use coal.

Hornsea One by the Danish energy company Ørsted (formerly DONG Energy) and Dogger Bank’s three projects developed by the Scottish SSE will make Britain the biggest offshore wind market in the world.

The largest single offshore wind farm under construction is Hornsea One (1,218MW), while Dogger Bank is made of three projects (Dogger Bank Creyke Beck A, Dogger Bank Creyke Beck B and Teesside A—each with a capacity of 1,200MW).

And batteries are the key challenge to making those electric cars work. Now, a new study says that those batteries may also be the key to reducing the power sector’s emissions by increasing efficiency.

The study by Element Energy, commissioned by energy companies Enel and Iberdrola, carmaker Renault and the NGO Transport & Environment, said that a smart deployment of electric cars which charge at low-demand times and batteries that feed back into the grid at high-demand times would reduce the need to build additional grid storage and power plants.

In total, 16.7 gigawatts (GW) of projects reached a final investment decision – 12.5 GW onshore and 4.2 GW offshore – 45 percent more than in 2017, WindEurope said in its annual report.

Funding for the new investments rose to 26.7 billion euros ($30.3 billion).

It has broken 13 different renewable energy records, putting 2017 on track to be the greenest year ever for clean, electricity production. WWF predicts that 2018 will be even greener and will usher in a new era of low carbon electricity.

These records are across the clean electricity sector. Highlights of 2017 included the greenest summer ever, as well the first full day since the Industrial Revolution where there was no coal power, record

breaking level of green power and the plummeting costs of off-shore wind.
