That’s according to a new report by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), which suggests a minimum of 180GW of new wind energy is needed every single year to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.</p>
<p>The data shows the wind industry installed<strong> 93GW</strong> of new wind last year, helping the current total global capacity reach <strong>743GW.</strong></p>

<p>The data, from the <strong>Global Wind Energy Council’s</strong> market intelligence unit, shows <strong>China</strong> installed <strong>3.06 GW</strong> last year. Its nearest rival, the Netherlands, installed a little under <strong>1.5 GW</strong> of capacity. The <strong>U.S.</strong> installed just <strong>12 megawatts</strong> of offshore capacity last year.</p>

<p class="Paragraph-paragraph-2Bgue ArticleBody-para-TD_9x">“While some project completion dates have been pushed into <strong>2021</strong> due to the pandemic, next year is expected to be a record year for the wind industry with <strong>78 GW (gigawatts)</strong> of n<strong>ew wind capacity</strong> forecast to be installed in <strong>2021</strong>,” <strong>GWEC</strong> said in an <strong>outlook report.</strong></p>
