According to a new report by the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change (CMCC), the resulting climate impacts will cause irreversible devastation in G20 countries unless urgent action is taken to reduce emissions.

The first study of its kind, the G20 Atlas of Climate Impacts compiles scientific projections of how climate impacts could have implications for the world’s wealthiest countries in the coming years. The research finds that in the high-emissions scenario, exponential climate impacts can cause devastating damage to the G20.

New research published by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and Climate Analytics reveals the crucial impact of G20 countries on limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C.

In the published report, G20 countries, which cause 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions, will cause a temperature increase of 2.4°C in the world by the end of the century with their current climate targets. However, if these countries set ambitious emissions reduction targets for 2030 in line with the 1.5°C target and achieve net zero emissions by 2050, global temperature rise by the end of the century could be limited to 1.7°C.

Following the report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), described as “code red”, published last week, today IPSOS published the results of the opinion poll conducted by Mori and the Global Commons Alliance.

The research includes a set of findings that assess public attitudes towards the planet’s critical thresholds, the leadership needed to sustain the planet, and the economic and societal transformations needed. The findings of the study provide some of the most detailed predictions ever made on this important issue within the G20 countries.

According to Ember’s Global Electricity Review 2021 report, wind and solar power generated almost 1 in 10 of the world’s electricity in 2020. It is also stated that Turkey’s production in the field of renewable energy has exceeded the production of coal 4 times in the last 7 years, while the energy generated by wind and sun increased significantly last year from 4% to 12%.

With the Paris Agreement governments agreed that global greenhouse gas emissions need to be net-zero by 2050 to limit global warming to well below 2°C; but current emission reductions efforts fall short reaching this goal, the world is currently on track to 3°C+. The energy and especially the power sector with its fossil fuels coal, oil and natural gas is the dominant source of emissions.

A rapid decarbonization is required to enable emission reductions in all sectors.
