As the energy transition quickens and countries and consumers strive to decarbonize, global battery demand could surge exponentially and approach nine terawatt-hours (TWh) annually by 2030, 15 times the levels seen in 2021.

Rystad Energy research shows that although global battery demand in 2021 stood at 580 gigawatt-hours (GWh), more than double 2020’s total, global supply was still able to keep up. However, that is set to change in the coming years as the appetite for battery technologies in passenger vehicles and stationary storage grows significantly, straining the supply chain.

Asia liquefied natural gas (LNG) spot prices hit a record high of more than $59 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), tracking a surge in European gas prices on concern over tight supply after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Price agency S&P Global Commodity Insights‘ Japan-Korea-Marker (JKM), which is widely used as a spot benchmark in the region, climbed to $59.672 per mmBtu on Thursday, data showed.

Its previous record was set in October 2021 when it hit $56.326/MMBtu.

A new partnership formed aims to increase investments in renewable energy projects to speed up the global transition to net-zero emissions.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) will leverage their networks and cooperate on scaling up investments in low-carbon energy resources.

IRENA and CIF will share their expertise in raising capital and deployment of renewable energy projects to increase global investments in clean projects for climate mitigation.

Climate change challenges and the rise of renewable energy sources are increasing the social and environmental pressure on oil companies to re-position themselves in the societies in which they operate. They have been doing this in a variety of different ways.

Firstly, some oil companies have continued with business as usual and are strengthening their current strategies of oil extraction to maximise profits. Secondly, other oil companies have switched to low carbon sources, such as natural gas, blue hydrogen and biofuels.

Global hydrogen project pipeline will see strong growth in the next ten years as investments in the sector are predicted to reach $300 billion (£215bn) in total.

That’s according to a new report by the Hydrogen Council and McKinsey & Company, which suggests almost 228 large-scale projects in more than 30 countries have already been announced. The analysis estimates 85% of these projects are located in Europe, Asia and Australia.

Shortly after the global COVID-19 pandemic really took hold early this year, the energy and environment-focused news media became suddenly filled with boosterism stories about the supposedly accelerating Energy Transition. These stories all pushed the thesis that pandemic and its resulting bust in oil prices would somehow accelerate the flow of capital into renewables and electric vehicles (EVs) to the detriment of fossil fuels.

That we are on the path to a low-carbon future is beyond doubt. Despite disagreements among stakeholders and how we might get there, and the pace of change required there seems to be a broad unity in the long-term vision. We know we need an energy portfolio that both meets the needs of a growing population that is predicted to grow by 1.5 billion by the end of the century and satisfies the ever-increasing living standards of the existing populace.
