Fossil fuels have surpassed renewables to become the European Union’s largest source of power generation as use of natural gas reached its highest point in a decade, the bloc’s statistics office said on Thursday.

While Eurostat says renewables topped the list in the first year of the coronavirus pandemic, the economic recovery saw the region’s electricity supply increase by 4% in 2021, with coal, oil and gas.

Europe is being ravaged by an unprecedented energy crisis, and it may already be spreading. Asia, the world’s biggest buyer of gas and coal, may be next, with China particularly vulnerable because of the size of its economy.

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the big problem for China is not natural gas. It’s coal, which powers the majority of its power plants, Bloomberg reported this week, citing state-run outlet China Energy News.

According to a report in the news outlet, Chinese power plant operators are finding it hard to buy enough coal to keep their facilities running, which is raising the likelihood of an energy crunch when winter comes.

The 20-year Turkey-Azerbaijan gas agreement was renewed for a short time after 1 year of negotiations.

No price information and details regarding the agreement were shared, and Azerbaijan’s announcement by e-mail that the ‘temporary agreement was approved’ brought along comments that both parties aimed to take a position in the national and global market according to some developments and that the agreement would be valid until 2024.

Turkey was previously importing 6.6 billion cubic meters of gas per year from Azerbaijan within the framework of the agreement.

In March 2019 begins on the territory of Serbia the construction of the gas pipeline that will connect with the Turkish stream pipeline. Serbia’s Public Gas Corporation (SrbijaGas) Director Dushan Bajatovic said work on the construction of the pipeline from the Bulgarian to the Hungarian border will begin in the first half of March in 2019 and will be completed by 2020.

The section of the pipeline across Serbia will be 403 kilometers long and will cost about 1.8 billion euros.
