Thanks to the shale revolution, the United States has an abundance of cheap natural gas. In 2016, natural gas surpassed coal as America&#8217;s leading fuel source for the first time.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Natural gas&#8217; share of the US power market is expected to increase from 35% in 2018 to 37% by 2020, according to the EIA. Renewables other than hydropower are projected to grow from 10% in 2018 to 13% in 2020.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Power plants will keep moving away from coal because of economics and concerns about climate change, too.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Last year was likely the second-highest year ever for retirements of coal-fired power plants, the EIA has previously said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">For example, Xcel Energy (<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=xel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">XEL<\/a>), a Minneapolis-based power company that serves western and Midwestern states, announced plans last month to deliver\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.xcelenergy.com\/company\/media_room\/news_releases\/xcel_energy_cuts_carbon_emissions_35_percent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100% carbon-free electricity by 2050<\/a>. Small-scale solar generating capacity is expected to soar by 44% over the next two years, the EIA said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Power executives say major companies increasingly want to buy more clean energy.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">For example, Enel Green Power North America reached agreements last year to provide wind power to Bloomberg, General Motors (<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=gm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GM<\/a>), Facebook (<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=FB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FB<\/a>) and Adobe (<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=ADBE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ADBE<\/a>). Earlier this month, Enel, which is part of the Italian energy giant Enel Group (<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=ENLAY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ENLAY<\/a>),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2019\/01\/04\/1680772\/0\/en\/Enel-Starts-Construction-in-U-S-of-Its-Largest-Wind-Farm-Leveraging-New-Offtake-Strategy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced plans to build a $600 million wind farm<\/a>in Texas.
