While customers seeking a new EV haven\u2019t had a\u00a0lot of options to date, the range of makes and models will be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/think-electric-vehicles-are-great-now-just-wait-11545838139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/think-electric-vehicles-are-great-now-just-wait-11545838139\">significantly expanding<\/a>\u00a0in the next few dozen months as car makers roll out new lines, including a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2018\/11\/29\/rivian-r1t-electric-pickup-truck-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/electrek.co\/2018\/11\/29\/rivian-r1t-electric-pickup-truck-order\/\">400+ mile range 4&#215;4 electric pickup truck<\/a>\u00a0that comes with external power outlets and a built in air compressor.<\/h1>\n<p>Of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.automobilemag.com\/news\/u-s-auto-sales-totaled-17-25-million-calendar-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.automobilemag.com\/news\/u-s-auto-sales-totaled-17-25-million-calendar-2017\/\">17.3 million cars and trucks<\/a>\u00a0sold in 2017, about 1.2%, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/december-2017-plugin-electric-vehicle-sales-report-card\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/insideevs.com\/december-2017-plugin-electric-vehicle-sales-report-card\/\">200,000 of them, were EVs<\/a>. However, many dealerships appear to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/12\/01\/science\/electric-car-auto-dealers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/12\/01\/science\/electric-car-auto-dealers.html\">less than enthusiastic<\/a>\u00a0about selling them, leading to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2016\/08\/15\/new-study-tesla-store-model-dealerships-electric-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/electrek.co\/2016\/08\/15\/new-study-tesla-store-model-dealerships-electric-vehicles\/\">poor buying experiences<\/a>\u00a0and possibly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41560-018-0173-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41560-018-0173-5\">fewer EV total sales<\/a>. There are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41560-018-0152-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41560-018-0152-x\">multiple reasons<\/a>\u00a0for this, including a lack of knowledge and longer sales time, but one major one seems to be that since EVs require\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/vehicles\/electric_maintenance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/vehicles\/electric_maintenance.html\">less maintenance<\/a>\u00a0than conventional vehicles, the dealership service departments stand to lose revenue.<\/p>\n<p>While it might be a downside for dealerships, less maintenance is also one of the biggest selling points of EVs, which cost about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/avt.inl.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/pdf\/fsev\/costs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/avt.inl.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/pdf\/fsev\/costs.pdf\">one-third per mile<\/a>\u00a0to drive (electricity vs. gasoline) and have significantly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/31f191d4-72c0-11e7-93ff-99f383b09ff9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/31f191d4-72c0-11e7-93ff-99f383b09ff9\">fewer moving parts<\/a>. But, since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbtnews.com\/service-department-now-makes-up-49-of-your-dealerships-gross-profit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.cbtnews.com\/service-department-now-makes-up-49-of-your-dealerships-gross-profit\/\">about half<\/a>\u00a0of car dealers\u2019 revenue comes from their service departments, and vehicle service is about a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wardsauto.com\/dealer\/dealership-service-department-marketing-sputters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.wardsauto.com\/dealer\/dealership-service-department-marketing-sputters\">$250B per year<\/a>\u00a0industry,\u00a0<span class=\"tweet_quote\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.forbes.com%2Fsites%2Fjoshuarhodes%2F2019%2F01%2F04%2Fthe-people-want-evs-but-who-will-sell-them-to-us%2F&amp;text=More%20EVs%20could%20mean%20billions%20of%20dollars%20in%20lost%20service%20revenue.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.forbes.com%2Fsites%2Fjoshuarhodes%2F2019%2F01%2F04%2Fthe-people-want-evs-but-who-will-sell-them-to-us%2F&amp;text=More%20EVs%20could%20mean%20billions%20of%20dollars%20in%20lost%20service%20revenue.\">more EVs could mean billions of dollars in lost service revenue.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Over the recent winter break, my sister and brother in law were looking to buy their first EV. Given their rural location and lack of EV charging infrastructure, they had their eyes on a plug-in hybrid, like a Chevy Volt. However, their experience seemed almost tailored to dissuade them. They went to five dealerships, with no luck. Responses from salespeople included:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cNoooooo! You don\u2019t want one of those, that\u2019s a dinosaur. Let me show you some cars you would rather have.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe don\u2019t see those around here much, and frankly don\u2019t want to look for one.
