Bets on wind and solar have paid off, but the rest have mostly fizzled. Turbines and panels received about half the spending on renewables in 2004, according to Bloomberg NEF. This year, the two technologies will suck up 93 percent of global spending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that wind and solar got to scale first,\u201d said Gabriel Alonso, an executive with Quantum Energy Partners, a Houston-based private equity company. \u201cOther renewables have been cornered by the now-permanent success of wind and solar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wind and solar have become the\u00a0<a title=\"EIA Energy Data\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=36092\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">largest sources<\/a>\u00a0of new power in the U.S. and parts of Europe. That growth is accelerating the retirement of aging carbon-spewing coal plants. Total spending is expected to decline this year, in part because of a pull-back in China, but also because prices have come down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith solar and wind so cheap, why should you bother with anything else?\u201d said Jenny Chase, an analyst at BNEF. \u201cThere just aren\u2019t a lot of opportunities for mass deployment for anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is also creating new challenges because panels and turbines can\u2019t generate electricity around the clock. There are competing forms of clean energy that can fill the gap. Marine energy systems produce electricity from the never-ending motion of waves and tides, but they\u2019re not price competitive. Geothermal systems use underground steam pockets that can be tapped anytime, but are only found in specific locations. Batteries can store electricity until it\u2019s needed, but they\u2019re still costly, even though\u00a0<a title=\"The Battery Boom to Attract $1.2 Trillion in Investment By 2040\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-11-06\/the-battery-boom-will-draw-1-2-trillion-in-investment-by-2040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prices<\/a>\u00a0are coming down quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSolar and wind can get you to 80 percent, but not all the way,\u201d said Chase. \u201cTo fully decarbonize, you have to look elsewhere.
