Projeyi y\u00fcr\u00fcten Iceland Deep Drilling Project (IDDP) Thor ad\u0131n\u0131 verdikleri ekipmanlar\u0131 ile yerkabu\u011fundan 5 km derine inen bir sondaj yapmaktad\u0131r. Saha ise \u00fclkenin tektonik levhalar aras\u0131ndan \u0131s\u0131 s\u0131zan Reykjanes yar\u0131madas\u0131nda bulunmaktad\u0131r.<\/p>\n<p>Projenin ba\u015flat\u0131lmas\u0131na neden olan ise IDDP\u2019nin 2009 y\u0131l\u0131ndaki bir sondaj soras\u0131nda kazayla magmaya denk gelmesi ama korozyon problemleri nedeni ile sondaj\u0131 bitirmesi olmu\u015ftur. Daha \u00f6nce d\u00fcnyada yap\u0131lan hi\u00e7bir \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmada bu kadar derine inilmedi\u011fi, ama 50 MW enerji potansiyeli olan bu kayna\u011f\u0131n hi\u00e7 bir jeotermal buhar ya da s\u0131v\u0131 ile kar\u015f\u0131la\u015ft\u0131r\u0131lamayacak kadar \u00f6nemli bir kaynak oldu\u011fu belirtilen proje, d\u00fcnya i\u00e7in de \u00f6nem ta\u015f\u0131maktad\u0131r.
