However, much has <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-162235\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enerjigazetesi.ist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/iStockGaleanu-Mihai-1353967009-696x392-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.enerjigazetesi.ist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/iStockGaleanu-Mihai-1353967009-696x392-1.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.enerjigazetesi.ist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/iStockGaleanu-Mihai-1353967009-696x392-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.enerjigazetesi.ist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/iStockGaleanu-Mihai-1353967009-696x392-1-500x282.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.enerjigazetesi.ist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/iStockGaleanu-Mihai-1353967009-696x392-1-80x45.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>changed in the short time since that report was published.<\/h2>\n<p>The global economy rebounded at record speed in 2021 from the COVID-19 pandemic, with GDP growth reaching 5.9%. As energy intensity improvements stalled, global energy demand increased by 5.4%. Surging energy demand was in part met by increased use of coal, resulting in a 1.9\u00a0gigatonnes (Gt) jump in emissions in 2021, the largest annual increase in global CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions from the energy sector ever recorded.<\/p>\n<p>This brought total CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions from the energy sector to 36.6\u00a0Gt in 2021. Recent investment in fossil fuel infrastructure not included in the 2021 Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario would result in 25\u00a0Gt of emissions if run to the end of its lifetime (around 5% of the remaining carbon budget for 1.5\u00a0\u00b0C).\u00a0At the same time, 2021 also saw renewables-based electricity generation reach an all-time high, a record more than 500\u00a0terawatt-hours (TWh) above the level in 2020.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"m-block__aside\"><\/aside>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2021, the IEA published its\u00a0Net Zero by 2050: A Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector, which sets out a narrow but achievable pathway for the global energy sector to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
