The European Commission on Friday approved a 5.4-billion-euro ($5.4 billion) hydrogen project jointly funded by 15 EU countries and 35 companies including Alstom\u00a0(ALSO.PA)\u00a0and Daimler Truck\u00a0(DTGGe.DE), seeking to gain the edge in an innovative sector.<\/h2>\n

Other participating companies include Ansaldo, Bosch, Enel\u00a0(ENEI.MI)<\/strong>, Fincantieri\u00a0(FCT.MI)<\/strong>, Orsted\u00a0(ORSTED.CO)<\/strong>\u00a0and Plastic Omnium\u00a0(PLOF.PA)<\/strong>. The group will take part in 41 projects<\/strong> in the hydrogen scheme focusing on generation of hydrogen, fuel cells, storage, transportation<\/strong> and distribution of hydrogen<\/strong> and end-users applications<\/strong>, in particular in the mobility sector.\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Russia’s<\/strong> unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Ukraine<\/strong> has only underlined the need for Europe<\/strong> to diversify its energy sources<\/strong> and fast-forward<\/strong> the green transition<\/strong>,”<\/em> Commission Vice-President<\/em> Margrethe Vestager<\/strong> told a news conference.<\/p>\n

“Among the many technologies required, hydrogen proves<\/strong> to be an indispensable component<\/strong>,” she said.<\/p>\n

EU<\/strong> industry chief Thierry Breton<\/strong> said the project also underlined the bloc’s move<\/strong> away from fossil fuels.<\/p>\n

“It enables the clean transition of energy-intensive industries and increases our independence from fossil fuels,”<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n

The project, called IPCEI Hy2Tech, aims to attract another 8.8 billion euros<\/strong> in private investments.<\/p>\n

Products targeted under the program include highly efficient electrode materials<\/strong>, high performance fuel cells<\/strong> and innovative transport technologies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 27-country<\/strong> bloc<\/strong> has in recent years approved jointly funded projects in batteries, microelectronics and infrastructure, labelling<\/strong> such schemes as Important Projects of Common European Interest subject to looser state aid rules.<\/p>\n
