Primary energy demand in<strong> 2021<\/strong> exceeded the 2019 <strong>pre-COVID levels<\/strong> by <strong>8 EJ<\/strong>. The increase in primary energy in 2021 was driven by emerging economies, especially <strong>China<\/strong>, BP said, as <strong>COVID-related mobility restrictions<\/strong> were eased and industries bounced back last year.<\/p>\n<p>While emerging economies boosted <strong>primary energy consumption<\/strong> last year, <strong>primary energy demand<\/strong> in developed economies was still below<strong> 2019 levels<\/strong> last year, BP said.<\/p>\n<p>The rise in primary energy between <strong>2019<\/strong> and <strong>2021<\/strong> was entirely driven by <strong>renewable energy sources.<\/strong> The level of <strong>fossil fuel energy<\/strong> consumption globally remained unchanged between <strong>2019<\/strong> and <strong>2021<\/strong>, with lower oil demand offset by<strong> higher natural gas<\/strong> and <strong>coal consumption<\/strong>, according to BP.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Global primary energy demand jumped by 5.8 percent last year and exceeded the pre-pandemic levels of 2019 by 1.3 percent, BP\u00a0said\u00a0in its annual Statistical Review of World Energy 2022 on Tuesday.
