The U.S. Transportation Department said on Thursday it would award $6.4 billion over 5 years to states to fund \"\"projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.<\/h2>\n

The funding, part of a $1 trillion<\/strong> infrastructure bill approved by Congress in November<\/strong>, will help states fund trail facilities for pedestrians<\/strong> and bicyclists<\/strong> and projects that support the deployment of alternative fuel vehicles.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Transportation is the sector that contributes the most carbon emissions in the U.S. economy<\/strong>, which means that transportation<\/strong> must aspire to be a major part of the solution,”<\/em>Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told reporters.<\/p>\n

The $6.4 billion<\/strong> program requires states to develop plans to reduce transportation emissions and distributes money through a formula developed for state and local governments.<\/p>\n
