There\u2019s nowhere near enough alternative gas supply available for the next <strong>four years<\/strong> until new volumes of <strong>LNG<\/strong> from the <strong>US<\/strong> and<strong> Qatar<\/strong> become available.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, for <strong>Europe<\/strong>, it\u2019s about maximizing pipeline imports from <strong>Norway, Azerbaijan<\/strong> and <strong>North Africa;<\/strong> outcompeting Asia for flexible<strong> LNG<\/strong>; and managing demand. Throughout this period, Russia has leverage and can manipulate volumes;<strong> after 2026,<\/strong> prices should ease.<\/p>\n<p>High gas prices mean <strong>coal\u2019s outlook<\/strong> is brighter. But thermal <strong>coal is less influential<\/strong> than it was in the power system and load factors are already close to being maxed out. <strong>Gas-to-coal<\/strong> switching has supported carbon prices in the <strong>EU<\/strong> and <strong>UK<\/strong> emissions trading system (ETS) after a wobble at the start of the war.
