This, it notes, equates to \u201cabout <strong>2.8%<\/strong> of global <strong>CO2 emissions<\/strong> from fossil fuel combustion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, the World Wildlife Fund describes aviation as \u201cone of the fastest-growing sources of the greenhouse gas emissions driving global climate change.\u201d It adds that air travel is \u201ccurrently the most carbon intensive activity an individual can make.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-smallSubtitle\">A variety of solutions<\/h2>\n<p>In a phone interview, Iain Gray, director of aerospace at the <strong>U.K.\u2019s Cranfield University<\/strong>, described zero carbon as \u201cthe top priority\u201d for the industry, and he sought to emphasize the importance of developing a range of solutions to tackle the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe really big technology driver is around the propulsion system,\u201d he said, \u201cbut that doesn\u2019t take away from the importance of new technologies around \u2026 new lightweight materials, enhanced carbon composite materials, and the systems itself.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Wright brothers\u2019 historic flight in 1903 to the development of supersonic aircraft, the history of aviation has been driven by technology and ambition.
