Switzerland’s policy on fighting climate change has been thrown into doubt after voters rejected key measures in a popular vote.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A referendum saw voters narrowly reject the government’s plans for a car fuel levy<\/strong> and a tax on air \"\"tickets.<\/strong> The measures were designed to help Switzerland<\/strong> meet targets under the Paris Agreement<\/strong> on climate change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Many voters<\/strong> appear to have worried about the impact on the economy<\/strong> as the country tries to recover from Covid-19<\/strong>. Opponents also pointed out that Switzerland<\/strong> is responsible for only 0.1%<\/strong> of global emissions, and expressed doubts<\/strong> that such policies would help the environment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The vote, under Switzerland’s system of direct democracy<\/strong>, went 51%<\/strong> against, 49%<\/strong> in favour. The Swiss government wants to bring emissions down to half of 1990<\/strong> levels by 2030<\/strong>. Two more national votes on environmental issues<\/strong> were also defeated, though the results were expected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
