The Biden administration announced Thursday an effort to slash the cost of solar energy by 60% within the next decade, a feat officials said was essential to achieving the president\u2019s goal of 100% clean energy by \"\"2035.<\/h1>\n

The solar goal, being implemented by the Energy Department<\/strong>, calls for reducing utility-scale solar energy\u2019s<\/strong> current cost of 4.6 cents<\/strong> per kilowatt-hour to 3 cents<\/strong> by 2025<\/strong> and 2 cents<\/strong> by 2030.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn many parts of the country, solar is already cheaper than coal<\/strong> and other fossil fuels,<\/strong> and with more innovation we can cut the cost again by more than half within the decade,\u201d Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm<\/strong> said in a statement.<\/p>\n

To help achieve the new goal, the department announced $128 million<\/strong> in new funding aimed at lowering the power source\u2019s cost, improving its performance, and speeding its deployment. Most of the money will go to research on thin-film solar<\/strong> and concentrating solar-thermal technologies.<\/strong><\/p>\n
