A new analysis by the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) suggests the drop in energy consumption was the highest since Second World War and was followed by a 12% fall in carbon dioxide \"\"emissions.<\/h1>\n

The findings also show the sharp decrease in oil and\u00a0coal\u00a0demand<\/strong> pushed the share of\u00a0fossils<\/strong>\u00a0in the energy mix to its lowest level since 1961.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The report also finds that imports of low carbon technologies<\/strong> increased by 27%<\/strong>, a rise that was mainly driven by\u00a0battery-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles<\/strong>\u00a0and lithium-ion batteries<\/strong> \u2013 taken together, these products covered<\/strong> 56%<\/strong> of total low carbon products<\/strong> imports last year.<\/p>\n

That compares to 33%<\/strong> of low carbon imports<\/strong> in 2019.<\/p>\n

Francesco Gracceva<\/strong>, ENEA Analyst, said: \u201cThe drop in energy consumption in 2020<\/strong> is the strongest since 1943 – 44,<\/strong> during the Second World War<\/strong>, indeed, during the most recent crisis<\/strong>, that is the financial crisis of 2009<\/strong>, energy demand fell by just 5,7%<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n
