The plight of millions without power and heat captured the headlines and attracted world-wide attention.<\/h1>\n<p>What <strong>little discussion<\/strong> there was of\u00a0<strong>shortages at gasoline stations<\/strong>\u00a0and of <strong>natural gas outages<\/strong>, was in the context of the <strong>power outages<\/strong>. (The gas stations couldn\u2019t pump fuel due to power outages, and natural gas is the leading fuel for generating electricity nationwide,\u00a0<strong>including in Texas<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-131421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enerjigazetesi.ist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/enerji-guvenligi-icin-yeni-petrol-elektrik-tir.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.enerjigazetesi.ist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/enerji-guvenligi-icin-yeni-petrol-elektrik-tir.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.enerjigazetesi.ist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/enerji-guvenligi-icin-yeni-petrol-elektrik-tir-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.enerjigazetesi.ist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/enerji-guvenligi-icin-yeni-petrol-elektrik-tir-768x564.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.enerjigazetesi.ist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/enerji-guvenligi-icin-yeni-petrol-elektrik-tir-500x367.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.enerjigazetesi.ist\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/enerji-guvenligi-icin-yeni-petrol-elektrik-tir-68x50.jpg 68w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/strong>It is the\u00a0<strong>largest source of energy<\/strong>\u00a0used by American consumers and businesses\u2014larger than <strong>oil.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0And it\u2019s especially important for <strong>US families\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 nearly<strong> 3 times<\/strong> bigger than the<strong> next-largest<\/strong> (non-transport) source of <strong>energy<\/strong> for <strong>US households<\/strong> (natural gas).<\/p>\n<p>Electricity is the <strong>new oil<\/strong> when it <strong>comes to security<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Policymakers<\/strong> in <strong>Washington<\/strong> and other world capitals have spent<strong> 50 years<\/strong> worrying about how to manage<strong> oil supply disruptions<\/strong>. But the immediacy of <strong>power outages<\/strong> and the <strong>ubiquity of critical elements<\/strong> of modern life powered by <strong>electricity<\/strong> mean the impact of <strong>oil supply<\/strong> disruptions are a walk in the park compared with our <strong>power vulnerabilities<\/strong>.
