The deep freeze that afflicted the center of the US last week caused massive power outages in Texas and surrounding states. The plight of millions without power and heat captured the headlines and attracted world-wide attention.<\/h1>\n

What little discussion<\/strong> there was of\u00a0shortages at gasoline stations<\/strong>\u00a0and of natural gas outages<\/strong>, was in the context of the power outages<\/strong>. (The gas stations couldn\u2019t pump fuel due to power outages, and natural gas is the leading fuel for generating electricity nationwide,\u00a0including in Texas<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/strong>It is the\u00a0largest source of energy<\/strong>\u00a0used by American consumers and businesses\u2014larger than oil.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0And it\u2019s especially important for US families\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 nearly 3 times<\/strong> bigger than the next-largest<\/strong> (non-transport) source of energy<\/strong> for US households<\/strong> (natural gas).<\/p>\n

Electricity is the new oil<\/strong> when it comes to security<\/strong>.\u00a0Policymakers<\/strong> in Washington<\/strong> and other world capitals have spent 50 years<\/strong> worrying about how to manage oil supply disruptions<\/strong>. But the immediacy of power outages<\/strong> and the ubiquity of critical elements<\/strong> of modern life powered by electricity<\/strong> mean the impact of oil supply<\/strong> disruptions are a walk in the park compared with our power vulnerabilities<\/strong>. And\u00a0our dependence on electricity<\/strong> and our vulnerability<\/strong> to disruptions are rising.\u00a0\u00a0It is critical that we recognize that our national security<\/strong> \u2013 and a successful climate policy<\/strong> \u2013 both depend on building a more a robust and resilient power system<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0(And this is from a guy who has spent 35 years working on oil & security!)<\/p>\n
