Volkswagen sold more electric cars across the globe than Tesla at the end of last year for the first time ever, according to an\u00a0analysis\u00a0by business consultancy AlixPartners.<\/h1>\n

The brands of the Volkswagen group, which include Porsche<\/strong> and Audi<\/strong>, sold 192,000 fully electric cars<\/strong> or plug-in hybrid vehicles in the fourth quarter, compared to\u00a0Tesla’s<\/strong>\u00a0181,000 fully electric \"\"models.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Both fully battery-electric vehicles<\/strong> and plug-in hybrids<\/strong>, which also have a combustion engine<\/strong> on board, usually count as “electric cars”<\/strong> in official documents and targets, but mild hybrids<\/strong> without a plug do not<\/strong>. Tesla<\/strong> only sells electric cars without a conventional motor<\/strong>, whereas plug-in hybrids also contribute to\u00a0VW’s<\/strong> tally. Many clean mobility proponents say that plug-in hybrids<\/strong> are not as clean as the carmakers<\/strong> say because many are often driven in combustion-engine mode<\/strong> and are not charged. <\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reflected in Alix Partners’ ranking of combined total electric range of all cars sold, where the Californian company remained the undisputed leader. Tesla sold cars with a combined range of around 100 million kilometres in the fourth quarter, compared to\u00a0VW’s<\/strong> 45 million kilometres.<\/p>\n
