General Motors said Thursday it plans to be carbon neutral by 2040 in its global operations and hopes to offer only zero-emissions vehicles by 2035. The largest US automaker,\u00a0GM\u00a0had previously announced that it was working towards an “all electric future,” but it had not set any target date for achieving that goal.<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n
GM plans<\/strong> to cut emissions by transitioning to\u00a0<\/strong>battery-powered electric vehicles<\/strong>\u00a0or other zero-emissions technologies. This move will require an\u00a0investment<\/strong>\u00a0of $27 billion<\/strong>, up from the $20 billion<\/strong> announced before the pandemic.<\/div>\n

The automaker<\/strong> will work with the Environmental Defense Fund<\/strong> to eliminate<\/strong> tailpipe emissions from new light-duty vehicles by 2035<\/strong>. However a blog post from CEO Mary Barra<\/strong> referred to this timeline as an “aspiration” rather than a deadline or hard promise.<\/div>\n

This announcement comes after President Biden<\/strong> signed a flurry of executive orders this week aimed at tackling the climate crisis, including rejoining the\u00a0Paris Climate Agreement<\/strong>\u00a0on his first day<\/strong> in office.<\/div>\n

To help curb the company’s own emissions<\/strong>, GM said it will source 100% renewable energy<\/strong> to power its U.S. plants by 2030<\/strong> and global sites by 2035<\/strong> — 5 years<\/strong> earlier than previously announced. The company also joined 300 global companies<\/strong> by signing a pledge to reach a net-zero carbon<\/strong> emission<\/strong> target.<\/div>\n
