China\u2019s imports of liquefied natural gas will likely grow 10% to new highs this year as companies scoop up cheap supplies to cover increasing industrial use and robust residential demand.<\/h1>\n

With its total natural gas<\/strong> use likely expanding at 4-6%<\/strong> this year, China is the only major bright spot on the world gas market, where demand is set to fall by about 4%<\/strong> as the global economy<\/strong> contracts due to coronavirus lockdowns.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"LNG imports<\/strong> are set to hit a record 65-67 million tonnes<\/strong> this year, analysts and Chinese traders<\/strong> estimate, a tenth more than 2019\u2019s total<\/strong> and at a growth rate<\/strong> that could see China overtake Japan<\/strong> as the world\u2019s top buyer by 2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Some analysts believe China\u2019s economy<\/strong> is now pretty much back to its pre-virus growth<\/strong> path.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter taking a brief hit earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong>, China\u2019s gas demand recovered faster than expected, driven mostly by the industrial sector that has recovered to 2019 levels since May, \u201d said Alicia Wee, analyst at FGE.<\/p>\n

Companies booked more super-chilled gas<\/strong> from Qatar, Russia<\/strong> and Australia<\/strong>, taking advantage of record-low prices\u00a0LNG-AS<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0earlier in the year as demand sagged elsewhere.<\/strong><\/p>\n

China sees natural gas as a bridge fuel on its long journey to reach carbon neutral by 2060<\/strong>, and since 2016<\/strong> has switched millions of homes and thousands of factories<\/strong> to gas from coal.<\/p>\n

The gasification pace slowed<\/strong> along with the economy since 2019<\/strong>, but new pockets of industrial demand have emerged in manufacturing hubs like south China\u2019s Guangdong<\/strong> and east China\u2019s Shandong<\/strong> provinces.<\/p>\n

In Guangdong<\/strong>, China\u2019s<\/strong> first region to import LNG<\/strong>, authorities are pushing ceramic<\/strong> and glass<\/strong> makers to burn gas instead of coal<\/strong>, which will likely generate up to 8 billion cubic<\/strong> metres of fresh gas demand this year, or 2.6%<\/strong> of the national total, according to a report carried this week by the Shanghai Oil<\/strong> and Gas<\/strong> Exchange.<\/p>\n
