Danish energy firm\u00a0Orsted\u00a0and\u00a0TSMC, a Taiwan-headquartered semiconductor company which supplies businesses such as\u00a0Apple, have signed a deal described as \u201cthe world\u2019s largest renewables corporate power purchase agreement.\u201d Announced Wednesday, the 20-year deal will see TSMC \u2013 also known as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company \u2013 purchase all the \"\"energy produced by Orsted\u2019s yet-to-be-built 920-megawatt offshore wind farm off Taiwan.<\/h1>\n

The fixed price contract will come into force when commercial operations at the facility begin. This is expected to be in 2025\/26<\/strong>, according to Orsted, subject to a final investment decision and grid availability.<\/p>\n

Located in the Taiwan Strait<\/strong>, the wind farm, known as \u201cGreater Changhua 2b & 4,\u201d<\/strong> will be Orsted\u2019s third offshore facility<\/strong> in Taiwan<\/strong>. It is currently building the \u201cGreater Changhua 1 & 2a\u201d<\/strong> offshore wind farm<\/strong>, which will have a capacity of 900 MW<\/strong>, and co-owns the 128 MW<\/strong> Formosa 1 project.<\/p>\n

In simple terms, a renewable corporate power<\/strong> purchase agreement, or PPA, refers to a deal where an energy producer sells power to a business at a fixed price over a set period of time.<\/p>\n

\u201cHistorically\u2026 corporate PPAs have emerged from the U.S. market,\u201d Shashi Barla, a principal analyst at Wood Mackenzie, told CNBC.com in a phone interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you looked at the data of corporate PPAs in the U.S., it has increased significantly in the past four years and in the past two years it\u2019s also kind of gaining traction in the European markets.\u201d<\/p>\n

With regards to Asia, Barla said corporate PPAs in the region were \u201ca very new phenomenon\u201d but explained it was a \u201cmatter of time\u201d before commercial and industrial offtake agreements gained traction there.<\/p>\n

The last few years have seen a number of major U.S.<\/strong> firms, such as Google<\/strong> and\u00a0Amazon<\/strong>, strike these types of agreements to buy renewable energy.<\/p>\n

Other examples include\u00a0Microsoft<\/strong>\u00a0signing a 15-year<\/strong> power purchase agreement for the energy produced\u00a0by a 74-MW solar power facility in North Carolina.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fellow tech giant\u00a0Facebook<\/strong>\u00a0has also described itself as being \u201ca leading corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally\u201d in 2019.<\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
