When a financial crisis begins to unfold, it\u2019s hard to assess the impact until well after the fact. The dot-com crash that started in 2000 and the subprime mortgage crisis that started in 2007 played out over several years. The S&P 500 recorded three consecutive double-digit losses from 2000 through 2002. Then after a weak 2007, the index dropped nearly 40% in 2008.<\/h1>\n

During these events, you just didn\u2019t know on a day-to-day basis how bad things would turn out. You could only pinpoint the start and end of these crises with a couple of years of hindsight.<\/p>\n

But sometimes an event looks like it will be more significant than it turns out to be. Oil prices fell nearly \"\"20%<\/strong> during the 2002-2003 SARS outbreak, but the impact was relatively short-lived because the outbreak was brought under control. There was an economic impact, but it wasn\u2019t extensive.<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t know when the next crisis is coming. We don\u2019t even know whether it has started. But there is a candidate. Nearly 80,000 people have now been diagnosed with Covid-19, a new strain of coronavirus. The death toll has now exceeded 2,000, nearly all in China.<\/p>\n

Beijing is taking aggressive measures that are hurting the Chinese economy. (At least one economist is warning that the virus will\u00a0paralyze China<\/strong>). Oil prices have already shed 20% on fears of a slowdown in the Chinese economy. Citigroup analysts have suggested that the virus could reduce oil demand by 1 million barrels a day (BPD).<\/p>\n

This week analysts told\u00a0Utility Dive<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 which covers news and trends in the utility industry \u2014 that “This is going to be a very big deal” with respect to Chinese manufacturing.<\/p>\n

Eight provinces in China have announced work stoppages as a result of the outbreak, and that has impacted multiple solar manufacturing campuses. This is significant, as most of the world\u2019s solar panels are made in China.<\/p>\n

China is also home to most of the world\u2019s lithium-ion battery manufacturing<\/strong>. Utility Dive wrote that \u201cAnalysts at Wood Mackenzie estimate<\/strong> that the country’s battery storage production capacity<\/strong> could drop by 10% \u2014\u200b or 26 GWh<\/strong> \u2014\u200b of earlier forecasts for 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course this all depends on how quickly the outbreak is brought under control. We don\u2019t yet whether this outbreak is just gearing up, or whether it\u2019s starting to wind down. I often wonder how we are going to look back on this period a decade from now. Will we talk about the \u201ccoronavirus crash\u201d that started in 2020?<\/strong> Or will it turn out to be like the 2002-2003 SARS outbreak?<\/p>\n
