\u201cThe consequences of Covid-19<\/strong> for global oil demand will be<\/strong> significant,\u201d the Paris-based IEA<\/strong> said in a monthly report, using the new scientific name for the virus.<\/p>\n \u201cFor 2020 as a whole, we have reduced our global growth forecast by 365,000 bpd<\/strong> to 825,000 bpd<\/strong>, the lowest since 2011<\/strong>,\u201d the IEA said, adding that it assumed economic activity<\/strong> from the second quarter would return<\/strong> progressively to normal.<\/p>\n In the second quarter<\/strong> it said it expected oil demand to grow 1.2 million barrels<\/strong> per day before normalising in the third quarter<\/strong> with growth of 1.5 million bpd<\/strong> on likely economic stimulus measures in China.<\/p>\n \u201cChina was responsible for around three-quarters<\/strong> of last year\u2019s global oil demand<\/strong> growth. Before the outbreak of Covid-19<\/strong>, it was expected to drive over a third of oil consumption growth in 2020, but now we think it will be less than a fifth,\u201d the IEA<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n It forecast a fall in demand for oil produced by OPEC<\/strong> while output growth by U.S. companies might not be impacted until later in the year.<\/p>\n OPEC output in January sank to its lowest level<\/strong> since the 2009 global recession<\/strong>, the IEA said, as a blockade reduced Libyan exports and the UAE reined in production.<\/p>\n \u201cWith Covid-19<\/strong> potentially hitting demand hard in H1<\/strong>, producers are under pressure to make further cuts<\/strong>,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n OPEC, Russia and other producers<\/strong>, a group known as OPEC+<\/strong>, have agreed to cut output by 1.7 million<\/strong> bpd until the end of March to support the market.<\/p>\n OPEC+<\/strong> is considering holding an extraordinary policy meeting<\/strong> to consider deeper cuts, sources said.<\/p>\n The IEA said Chinese refiners<\/strong> were set to slash runs by 1.1 million bpd<\/strong> in the first quarter, with throughput in 2020<\/strong> contracting by 500,000 bpd<\/strong> year on year.
