OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday said an energy breakthrough is necessary for future artificial intelligence, which will consume vastly more power than people have expected.

Speaking at a Bloomberg event on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Altman said the silver lining is that more climate-friendly sources of energy, particularly nuclear fusion or cheaper solar power and storage, are the way forward for AI.

“There’s no way to get there without a breakthrough,” he said.

Microsoft has published its Digital Defense Report 2022, sharing insights on how the digital threat landscape is evolving and how to mitigate these issues. Microsoft’s report includes five chapters covering the state of cybercrime, nation-state threats, devices and infrastructure, cyber influence operations and cyber resilience.

One of the report’s key findings is that password attacks have grown by 74% compared with last year’s results, increasing to approximately 921 attacks per second.

Microsoft has also removed over 10,000 domains used by cybercriminals and 600 used by nation-state actors.

While its products reach consumers and businesses all over the world, one of the biggest headlines from the 2022 conference were not about a slimmer, faster new iPhone, but the company’s planned replacement for passwords that will be coming soon to Safari and iOS; a plan to make even the best password managers (opens in new tab) all but obsolete.
