The solar industry is among many sectors feeling the pinch of higher prices, according to a report released Tuesday by the Solar Energy Industries Association and Wood Mackenzie.

Prices rose quarter over quarter and year over year across every solar segment during the period. It’s the first time that residential, commercial and utility solar costs have risen in tandem since the energy consultancy began tracking prices in 2014.

The most-significant cost pressures came from a jump in prices for raw materials, including steel and aluminum.

It is predicted by Wood Mackenzie, one of the global consulting companies, that the photovoltaic (PV) capacity in the Asia-Pacific Region, led by China, will reach 1,500 GW, with a 3-fold increase by 2030.

It is estimated that the share of total electricity capacity in solar energy will be 51% by 2030 in the top 10 solar energy markets of Asia Pacific.

Expressing that market barriers have been overcome with new policies in the region, Xin Zhang noted that the share of solar energy in Asia Pacific’s energy production will increase from 4% in 2020 to 10% in 2030.

The U.S. solar market surpassed 100 GWdc of installed electric generating capacity, doubling the size of the industry over the last three-and-a-half years, according to the U.S. Solar Market Insight Q2 2021 report, released today by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Wood Mackenzie.

Solar had a record-setting Q1 2021 and accounted for 58% of all new electric capacity additions in the United States. Renewable energy accounted for nearly 100% of all new electric capacity in Q1.

A 500 megawatt solar photovoltaic plant, described by Spanish utility Iberdrola as “Europe’s largest,” sent its first megawatt hour of energy to the grid earlier this week, a welcome bright spot for an industry that in the months ahead could experience difficulties brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Núñez de Balboa facility is located in Extremadura, a region in the west of Spain. According to Iberdrola, it has over 1.4 million solar panels and will be able to supply energy to 250,000 people per year.

Oil and gas markets are ensnared by oversupply and falling prices, not to mention a global pandemic. It illustrates the need to be more responsive to changes in the energy climate. And the good news is that the signs are pointing to more investment in renewables, specifically offshore wind power.
